As you may be aware, on average people spend at least one third of their life in the workplace. A healthy happy work experience can have a positive impact on an individual’s mental health and their general wellbeing.

Having a job enables people to earn an income and gives them opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

Good mental and physical health at work goes hand in hand with good management and a productive workforce. Therefore, there is a need for staff, and their supervisors, to gain an understanding of the demands on one another’s time; gaining an understanding of why someone is behaving the way they are under certain pressures or in different circumstances.

Having an awareness of mental health at work is becoming increasingly important, especially during the uncertain times of the COVID-19 Pandemic – times in which the unpredictability of the virus has caused much upset within the business community.

Rotary in the South West Peninsula (Devon, Cornwall, and The Isles of Scilly) have invested funds to facilitate and deliver a fully funded program designed to improve mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Rotary’s specialist courses are free to access. The courses are helping business owners and employees identify, and tackle, factors which may be having a negative impact upon their colleague’s wellbeing.

The first course of the three available is a ninety minute ‘taster’ session, which is a short workshop giving an overview of mental health and wellness at work.

The next level is the second course, which is aimed at increasing the awareness of how mental health affects an individual’s thoughts and actions – both in a positive and negative way. (This course is approximately 2 ½- 3 hours.)

The third course is a course which takes a more practical approach and helps people to identify strategies that their business can follow, to achieve a more positive healthy workplace. (This course is approximately 3 hours.)

All courses are followed by a short period of consultancy – free for businesses to take the idea forward and create positive change within their work environment.
